VOLUNTEER

Grand Junction Newcomers Club is known throughout the valley as a great resource for dedicated, hard-working volunteers. Every year, our members donate thousands of hours to organizations that support and strengthen the community. Check out the links below to learn more about some of the organizations our members support – and talk with them about their experiences! Our own organization is also fully supported by member volunteers. We are currently seeking volunteers for the following opportunities. Contact Gary Fitzpatrick at 419-450-9438.

Meeting Support:

Assist the club leads in setting up/breaking down for the monthly coffee and meeting. Light lifting required. Time commitment: 2-3 hours/month

Hospitality:

Help organize sign-ups for monthly meeting baked goods/snacks; provide treats as needed. Time commitment: 2 hours/month

Marketing Ambassadors:

Work with the marketing volunteer to update the event calendar on the website, post events on Facebook, reach out to new residents of Grand Junction. Time commitment: 4-6 hours/month.

Event Coordinators:

Support GJNC events, including the Labor Day Picnic, Holiday Party and other events as needed. Help plan the event, recruit and organize event volunteers, set up and clean up. Time commitment: depends on the event.

RSVP of Mesa County

If you’d like to get more involved in the community, RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) is a great place to start. It’s a non-profit clearinghouse  for people 55 and over with the goal of matching interests, skills and time availability with local volunteer positions. RSVP connects volunteers with ongoing volunteer positions as well as many one-time events. Contact the volunteer coordinator or fill out the online form.

Grand Junction Police Department Victim Services

The Victim Services Unit at the Grand Junction Police Department is recruiting new volunteer victim advocates.  Advocates take on the challenging role of meeting with victims of crime and other tragedies who are experiencing pain, confusion or loss.  When requested by police officers, advocates respond to homes, hospitals, accident scenes or the GJPD.  They may offer resources, emotional support or information on victim rights. Volunteers are trained in crisis intervention, as well as the issues surrounding the incidents they may encounter.  For more information contact Megan Weaver, GJPD Victim Services Coordinator, at 970-549-5290 or meganw@gjcity.org.

CASA of Mesa County

The mission of the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Mesa County is to provide a voice in court for children who are victims of abuse and neglect. CASA of Mesa County was created in 1997 in response to the high number of abused and neglected children living in foster care and other out of home placements. CASA depends on volunteers, who play a unique and extremely important role in advocating for the well-being of these children. Interested individuals must complete an application, provide recommendations, be interviewed, undergo a background check, and be thoroughly trained. Click here to apply.

Grand Valley Pets Alive

Grand Valley Pets Alive is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization whose mission is to find loving homes for all adoptable animals in our community. Help GVPA by adopting or fostering a shelter animal, donating to a local animal organization or volunteering in another role.

HILLTOP

Hilltop provides resources and services for families and individuals in need. With 20 programs that range from Assisted Living to Life Adjustment to Families First, Hilltop relies on volunteers to help deliver their services to our community.  Learn more by contacting the coordinator of volunteer services at 970-244-0659 or complete a volunteer application on the website.

HopeWest

HopeWest is a non-profit organization that provides physical, emotional, and spiritual care to hundreds of seriously ill patients and their families across Western Colorado. has multiple volunteer opportunities, including volunteers to provide companionship to patients. Family members sometimes can’t drive and they need transportation to do errands.  Also needed are volunteers to complete office tasks such as filing, computer work and receptionist duties. The Heirlooms for Hospice resale shop on Main Street needs volunteers to help customers, sort through merchandise or clean and move furniture in the store. 

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels provides hot meals to Mesa County more than 600 Mesa County seniors in both dining sites and delivered to their homes. The program has a waiting list and needs both donations and volunteers, especially drivers. Since 2003, Newcomer members have been responsible for at least one of the delivery routes. Mesa County Library

The Mesa County Library needs volunteers to help with children’s programming, shelving books weeknights and Saturdays, organizing periodicals, and assisting with one-time projects. English-language tutors are needed at the Central Library and seven other branches. See the About Us page on the website for more information on volunteer opportunities. The Art Center of Western Colorado

The Art Center of Western Colorado is the community’s hub for local artists and engagement in the arts. The five galleries host work by Western Colorado artists as well as national artists. In addition to exhibitions, the Art Center offers a range of classes and events for all ages. There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities, big and small — from serving on the board to helping to hang pictures for exhibitions to baking cookies for the annual art fair. The Grand Junction Symphony

Now in its 44th season, The Grand Junction Symphony provides high-quality orchestral performances and educational programs to the community. The GJSO is the largest professional orchestra between Denver and Salt Lake City. There are many ways to support the symphony by volunteering to help with individual fund-raising events (garden tour, jeep raffle, etc.) and newer programs designed to promote music education for K-12 students. Eureka McConnell Science Museum

Eureka McConnell Science Museum makes basic elements of science and mathematics accessible to students and adults through hands-on investigation. Founded by retired physicist John McConnell, the center features over 150 interactive exhibits in biology, physics, earth and space science, and electronics. The museum relies on volunteers to design, create and maintain exhibits, plan and conduct camps and other educational programs and provide visitor services.

Toilet Equity

Toilet Equity provides compost toilets around town for use by those who need better access, especially the unhoused population. Toilet Equity toilets are donor-funded, volunteer-built, and volunteer-maintained. The organization is looking for volunteers on our daily maintenance route, as well as as-needed building volunteers.
